Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy to Improve Balance

For many years, conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been prescribed to help manage perimenopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and vaginal dryness, as well as to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Over time, however, large research studies raised concerns about the safety of traditional synthetic HRT. Findings from the Women’s Health Initiative (2002–2006) showed increased risks of breast cancer, heart attack, stroke, and blood clots in women using conventional hormone therapy compared to those who did not.

What Are Bioidentical Hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are laboratory-made hormones derived from plant sources that are chemically identical to the hormones naturally produced by the human body. Commonly used bioidentical hormones include estrogen, progesterone, DHEA-S, and testosterone.

Because these hormones closely match the body’s own hormones, they are thought to be metabolized more naturally. Research suggests that bioidentical hormone therapy may be more effective for symptom relief and potentially carry a more favorable safety profile compared to conventional synthetic HRT, though ongoing research continues to refine best practices and long-term outcomes.

When Is BHRT Used?

Bioidentical hormone therapy is commonly used to support:

  • Perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Fertility support
As with any hormone therapy, BHRT is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Careful assessment, appropriate testing, and individualized dosing are essential to ensure both safety and effectiveness.
