Optimizing thyroid function—especially in the presence of thyroid disease or after partial or complete thyroid removal—can be complex. Not everyone feels well on standard thyroid medications such as Synthroid or levothyroxine. If these medications haven’t resolved symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, cold hands and feet, constipation, low mood, body aches, or brain fog, it does not mean you’re out of options.
There are alternative thyroid medications available. One example is desiccated thyroid hormone, which contains both T4 (the hormone found in Synthroid and levothyroxine) and T3—the more active form of thyroid hormone that many people need in order to feel their best.
Thyroid treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Finding the right approach requires a thorough assessment of symptoms, lab values, and how your body is responding at the cellular level. For some individuals, this may include alternative thyroid medications; for others, targeted nutritional, lifestyle, and supplement strategies play an equally important role.
With the right combination of medication (when needed), dietary support, and whole-body optimization, it is possible to significantly improve symptoms and quality of life—even if previous treatments have fallen short.
