Cortisol Testing for Stress Insight and Hormone Balance

Saliva testing is a reliable way to assess cortisol levels and how cortisol is released throughout the day. However, it is not a dependable method for measuring many other hormones, such as estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone, and hormone-related conditions should not be diagnosed using saliva testing alone.

When saliva testing is used, it is most often to measure cortisol at multiple points during the day through a diurnal (four-point) cortisol test. This allows us to evaluate the cortisol rhythm, or “cortisol curve,” and determine whether it is following the expected daily pattern. Understanding this pattern offers valuable insight into how the brain and adrenal glands are functioning and how this system may be influencing a patient’s overall health.
